UMMC Madison earns its first “A” Hospital Safety Grade
UMMC Madison earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group in its first assessment since UMMC acquired the hospital in May 2025, a testament to the hospital’s dedication to quality care, patient outcomes and experiences.

“This achievement reflects the exceptional work of our providers, nurses and staff who make patient safety their top priority every day,” said Dodie McElmurray, CEO – University and Community Hospitals. “We’re proud of the collaborative culture and shared commitment to excellence that make this recognition possible.”
Leapfrog is among the most widely used evaluations of the nation’s hospitals quality and safety metrics. Twice per year, the organization assesses more than 3,000 hospitals across the country, assigning each a letter grade based on more than 30 performance standards that track errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

“This grade reflects our ongoing commitment to providing our patients with excellent, safe care that leads to successful outcomes,” said Erica Smith, director of quality and patient safety at UMMC Madison. “Every team member plays a valuable role in ensuring we maintain this commitment to quality and safety.”
“Every score gives us insight into opportunities for improvement,” said Dr. Alan Jones, associate vice chancellor for health affairs. “We take that responsibility seriously and remain committed to delivering safe, exceptional care to our patients.”
