Mary Geneva Lindsey knows the ins and outs of the surgical intensive care unit well. She’s been the unit secretary there for 15 years, and when asked about her favorite part of the job, she doesn’t hesitate.

“The people,” she said. “I am a people person, and I love working with the nurses. Whatever I can do for them makes me happy.”

Lindsey, who lives in Raymond and has three grown children and three grandchildren, is a natural fixer and caretaker. She said at work, she does everything she can to ensure the nurses have everything they need. Her ultimate goal is to take care of the nurses and staff so they can best care for their patients, and she does this by managing everything related to the office and ensuring patient charts are accurate and complete.

She also has an affinity for Epic, the electronic health record used by the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She even goes so far as to say she “loves” the program.

In a setting where the staff is depended on to take care of the sickest of the sick, in what can be an intense and stressful environment, Lindsey’s commitment, work ethic, in addition to her close relationship with Epic, make a big difference.

“It can (be stressful), but I try not to let it be,” she said. “I try to make everything OK.”

Kimberly Horn, nurse manager in the SICU, said Lindsey holds things together in the SICU.

“She is the epitome of the perfect employee. With her unprecedented work ethic, customer service skills and professionalism she is a true asset to our unit and UMMC,” said Kimberly Horn, nurse manager for the SICU, said of Lindsey. “She sets the tone for our unit. Always with a positive and can-do attitude, she cares for the staff in a way that enables us to better care for our patients.”

She is one of a kind, said Horn.

“The mold was broken when she was made.”

Every institution is rich with personal stories. We want to know ours.

Do you know a student, staff, volunteer or faculty member at the University of Mississippi Medical Center whose story would make an interesting feature or deserves to be recognized?

Know someone who you think more people should know about because of his or her commitment to his or her job and/or the people he or she works with or for? Who has a fascinating hobby? Who participates in a remarkable group? Who has accomplished something amazing?

We want to learn more about each individual who makes up our extraordinary UMMC Family, and we want to share what makes each person unique and special in the Front and Center section of our dynamic new UMMC Intranet.

To nominate someone to be considered for a Front and Center feature, just complete and submit this short form. If that person is picked for a feature, a member of the Communications and Marketing staff will contact him or her to learn more about his or her personal story.

Soon, the rest of the Medical Center will know why your nominee is an outstanding reminder of what makes this place so special – the Front and Center.
