During its 69-year history, the University of Mississippi Medical Center has made contributions to the state, and the world, in medicine, science and education. Each month, we’ll recognize at least one of these major accomplishments.

In 1948, the Mississippi Legislature passed House Bill 291, which authorized the University of Mississippi to establish an academic nursing program. The appropriation set aside $60,000 for equipment and personnel, and a scholarship program was created. The Department of Nursing opened as part of the School of Medicine which was located in Oxford then. It was the first baccalaureate nursing program in Mississippi.
