Visitors to the Mississippi Children’s Museum Saturday got health screenings to make sure they’ll be ready for classes in August. The Back-to-School Health Rally, funded by the Child Health Development Project, also included fire and safety education, ideas for healthy eating and activities. Children’s of Mississippi patient family advocates for rare disease research

Emmalyn Hudson, a Children’s of Mississippi patient with a rare genetic condition, and her family were among advocates for legislation creating the Mississippi Rare Diseases Advisory Council at UMMC. The council will increase awareness of rare diseases and make public health recommendations. Read More

UMMC Jabaley-Songcharoen Hand Center gives child a thumb

Kobe Abron, a Jackson 2-year-old, was born without a right thumb. After complex hand reconstruction surgery, he now has a functional thumb that he’ll be strengthening through therapy and play.

UMMC seeks African American participants in world’s largest autism research study

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is one of five sites in the country dedicated to recruiting a broader cohort of families affected by autism spectrum disorder for SPARK. The study also seeks to support the work of all researchers and develop culturally relevant engagement across a variety of communities.

PICU nurse manager Gordon Gartrell an AACN Circle of Excellence Award winner

Gartrell, a UMMC School of Nursing alumnus, is one of 18 nurses in the country, and the only Mississippi nurse, to receive the honor. He’ll be honored at the upcoming American Association of Critical-Care Nurses’ National Teaching Institute and Critical Care Exposition in Denver.

Children’s of Mississippi epilepsy center receives highest level of accreditation

Epilepsy centers at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and Children’s of Mississippi both have Level 4 National Association of Epilepsy Centers accreditation, signifying the highest level of care. The two centers are the only NAEC-accredited epilepsy centers in the state.
