DEA # Required to Prescribe Controlled Substances

Starting November 2, 2020, you will no longer be able to prescribe controlled substances without a DEA# listed in Epic. We have had a number of patient safety incidents recently with patients who have controlled substance scripts printed, but a DEA# is not recorded in Epic for the prescribing provider. In these instances, when the patient gets to pharmacy, they are unable to fill the script and this results in a delay in care trying to get things corrected. 

All prescribing providers who do not have their DEA# loaded into Epic need a Helpdesk ticket to be submitted to request the DEA# be added to their profile if the provider already has DEA#. For residents who need to request a DEA#, this process should be completed and a Helpdesk ticket submitted once the number is issued as an institutional DEA will no longer be permitted for residents.
