PCA Ordering

On Tuesday, July 19, 2022, Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) ordering will convert from Adult or PED to weight-based for Fentanyl, Hydromorphone, and Morphine for the Jackson campus only. All order sets have been updated with the new weight-based panels.

In addition, an order for a 'Clinician bolus from PCA syringe' will be available as an individual order. The clinician bolus will have to be ordered separately

PCAs will still be ordered from the Panels section of Manage Orders. The order for the clinician bolus from PCA syringe will be found in the Medications section of Manage Orders.

The new PCA Bolus Order will be a once order when needed. This allows a provider to order additional pain medication when needed. On the infusion pump is an option to program for a bolus dose. This saves a nurse the inconvenience of retrieving additional medication from the Omnicell. (Clinician=Nurse)

The previous language in the PCA order "Do not give other medications" has been taken away as this is common practice.

Administering a bolus from a PCA syringe:

  1. On the MAR, click the due time for the bolus.
  2. Select a MAR action of "Bolus from Syringe."

3. Program the bolus on the pump.

  • From the home screen, select Bolus Dose
  • You will be prompted to insert the key and turn to "PROGRAM"
  • Program the bolus dose as ordered
  • It will then automatically redirect you back to the home screen
  • Push "Start" to begin the bolus dose
  • Lock the pump

4. The volume and rates from the bolus will be filed to the existing continuous infusion.
