Iodinated Contrast ShortageWe are currently experiencing an international shortage of GE HEalthcare's Iodinated contrast Omnipaque which is used for most computed tomography (CT) and many other diagnostic imaging-based procedures. Based on recommendations from the American College of Radiology, UMMC operational leadership has proposed the following strategies to conserve our limited supply of iodinated contrast: - All studies using iodinated contrast should be appropriate and indicated based on current care recommendations.
- All orders for studies requiring iodinated contrast should be discussed with a radiologist to determine if a non-contrast study can be performed or to determine if another diagnostic strategy may be available to provide similar information.
- Routine, surveillance scans which use iodinated contrast will be postponed and only the most critical procedures will be performed until the supply chain issues are corrected.
In addition, a BPA has been added to Epic and will fire when contrasted CT orders are entered: ![](https://www.umc.edu/DIS-Newsletters/images/images_2022/may_images_2022/pp 5.11.22 image 1.jpg)
