UMMC Surgical Antimicrobial Prophylaxis Guidelines

From: Craig Hallstrom, MD

On July 1, 2019 the approved UMMC Surgical Antimicrobial Prophylaxis Guidelines will be available in all Adult Pre-procedure Surgical order sets.  As providers have been trained on the new guidelines and procedures via Healthstream, this Provider Point is being sent as a reminder.

The approved antibiotics are included in a newly created antibiotic block that has been embedded in all surgical order sets to facilitate compliance and ensure discontinuation of prophylactic antibiotics after most operations. User saved pre-op and post-op order sets do not include this block and will be deleted from EPIC in order to decrease variability and ensure future updates to the guidelines can be easily adjusted in the system.

All specialty specific pre-procedure order sets now include the new antibiotic guidelines and the old antibiotic sections have been removed from all post-procedure order sets.  The Case Request order set has been replaced with the following:

  1. Adult Pre-op Case Request For Currently Bedded Patients

  2. Adult Pre-op Case Request For Outpatient/Day of Surgery Admission Patients (please use this order set for patients going to surgery directly from the ED)

In the Antibiotic section of the order sets ‘No Antibiotics Required’ is defaulted:

If antibiotics are required, choose the antibiotic group for your surgical case:

For non-surgical cases, the Case Request procedure order will remain as an available option. All providers are strongly encouraged to use standardized order sets for surgical cases.
