Winter Weather System Update
January 24, 2026
TO: UMMC Faculty, Staff and Students
FROM: Dr. Jonathan Wilson, Chief Administrative Officer
SUBJECT: Winter Weather System Update
We continue to track forecasts from the National Weather Service of the severe winter weather system moving across the southeast today. This system is bringing extreme cold temperatures and precipitation consisting of snow, sleet and freezing rain that will impact central and north Mississippi. Most of the northern half of the state is already experiencing wintry precipitation, with temperatures forecast to be below freezing in the metro-Jackson area later this weekend. NWS has issued an Ice Storm Warning for the metro area.
At this time, there are no changes authorized to any Medical Center operations – including classes – in central (including the Jackson metro area) and south Mississippi.
Health System leaders have authorized the closure of adult and pediatric clinics from Greenwood and northward on Monday. Patients with appointments on Monday are receiving cancellation notifications, and staff of impacted areas will reschedule those appointments. Managers of impacted clinics should communicate directly to employees about this operational change.
Any additional changes to Medical Center operations, including class schedules, will be announced through official communications.
All faculty and staff, including contract employees, should be familiar with the Inclement Weather and Emergency Conditions policy and the guidelines it provides in instances when normal operations are altered or you are unable to maintain your regular work schedule due to weather. If additional operational changes are authorized by UMMC executive leadership and announced through an official channel, employees should refer to the policy for how their normal work schedule may be impacted, if at all.
The Student Union is available to employees who are assigned to the Red category and need to stay on campus to maintain their regular work schedule. Additional information about temporary lodging can be found in the inclement weather policy here. Employees should contact their manager to request temporary lodging at the Student Union.
Thank you.
