Appointment of Interim Chair of Medicine
February 1, 2022
TO:Faculty, Staff and Students
FROM:Dr. Alan Jones, Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs
SUBJECT: Appointment of Interim Chair of Medicine
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael Hall, associate professor of medicine, associate division director of cardiovascular diseases, and associate vice chair of research, Department of Medicine, as UMMC’s interim chair of medicine, effective March 1, 2022.
Dr. Hall will succeed Dr. Javed Butler, who has served as chair and professor of the department since November 2017. I am grateful for Dr. Butler’s leadership in this role and his work in cultivating a strong and thriving department.
Dr. Hall, whose professional interests include hypertension, heart failure, advanced cardiovascular imaging, and obesity-induced cardiovascular and renal disease, received his medical degree from the School of Medicine in 2005 at UMMC, where he completed residency training in internal medicine.
After his residency, Dr. Hall participated in the physician-scientist pathway in cardiovascular research in the UMMC Department of Physiology and Biophysics. He also did fellowship training in cardiology at the Medical Center, and had a cardiovascular imaging fellowship at Wake Forest University Health Sciences in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he also earned a master’s degree in clinical and population translational sciences.
At UMMC, Dr. Hall also holds faculty appointments in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, and in the Department of Radiology.
He has assumed many leadership roles, including director of clinical and population science in the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research; associate program director of the Cardiology Fellowship Program; and cardiac imaging director for the Cardiovascular Service Line.
He holds editorial positions with a variety of professional journals and is the lead author or co-author on more than 120 published research manuscripts, as well as a dozen book chapters.
Dr. Hall is an investigator on numerous active NIH research grants. Among his many honors are the 2019 Gold Award for Research, Office of Sponsored Programs; and the 2018 Department of Medicine Exemplary Research Award.
I want to express my sincere thanks to Dr. Butler for his four years of service as chair. Please join me in thanking Dr. Butler and welcoming Dr. Michael Hall to the role of interim chair. Dr. Hall is a proven leader and esteemed colleague with a track record of excellence in all aspects of our tri-partite mission. I look forward to working with him to continue to advance the important work of the Department of Medicine.
Thank you.
