Anand PremDr. Prem will succeed Dr. Douglas Bacon, who has served as chair and professor of the department since August 2014. I am grateful for Dr. Bacon’s leadership and his work in building a strong department, and I wish him all the best in his retirement.

Dr. Prem, an expert in pain management, earned his medical degree from St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore, India. He did an internship in general surgery at Sinai Hospital, Detroit Medical Center, Wayne State University, followed by his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Dr. Prem, who is an active member of several committees in national and regional anesthesiology organizations, is the author or co-author of a variety of book chapters and has co-authored or edited numerous articles published in professional journals. He has made numerous poster presentations at national and regional conferences.

As medical director of University Pain Clinic, he has supervised its growth, including an increase in the number of patients treated there, and the addition of multiple advanced procedures facilitating the expansion of the pain fellowship.

Please join me in thanking Dr. Bacon for his years of service to UMMC and his patients, and welcoming Dr. Prem to the role of interim chair.

Thank you.
