Appointment of Neurology Chair

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. John “Brad” Ingram, professor of neurology and pediatrics, as chair of the Department of Neurology, effective today.

Brad IngramDr. Ingram, who has served as interim chair since March 20 of this year, is leading a department with a history that dates back to 1961, when neurology became a division of the UMMC Department of Medicine and then a separate department in 1977.

Dr. Ingram, whose specialty is epilepsy, is overseeing a faculty whose clinical and research interests have included cerebrovascular disease, neurocritical care, demyelinating disease, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, neuro-epidemiology, neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-oncology, neurogenetic disease, movement disorders, dementia and neuropsychology. 

Dr. Ingram first joined the Medical Center nearly two decades ago, graduating from the UMMC School of Medicine in 2005, then completing his residency in pediatrics and post-graduate training in child neurology at UMMC, serving as chief resident in each program.

Afterward, he completed a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology/pediatric epilepsy with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. In 2013, he rejoined the Medical Center as an assistant professor of pediatrics.

Dr. Ingram currently serves as executive vice chair of pediatrics, assistant dean of Graduate Medical Education, director of the Pediatric Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, associate program director of the child neurology residency and program director of the clinical neurophysiology fellowship.

He is board certified in epilepsy, clinical neurophysiology and adult neurology with special qualifications in child neurology.

For his outstanding achievements as a member of the pediatrics faculty, he is the two-time winner of the Holliman Award. He also has earned numerous other honors as a resident, fellow and faculty member, including the UMMC School of Medicine Trailblazer Teaching Award, Nelson Order of Teaching Excellence, Alpha Omega Alpha Faculty of the Year and induction into the Academy of Excellence in Education as an inaugural member.

Dr. Ingram also serves as a member or officer of several other professional organizations, including the Child Neurology Society, American Epilepsy Society and Professors of Child Neurology. He is current vice president and rising president of the Southern Pediatric Neurology Society. His list of public service activities is extensive.

The coauthor of a variety of scientific publications, Dr. Ingram has also delivered a number of invited lectures, as well as poster and oral presentations. He is currently the principal investigator on two research projects.

Dr. Ingram is a proven, respected and trusted leader. I am grateful for his commitment to UMMC and very much look forward to his continued leadership. Please join me in welcoming him in his new role.
