TO:All UMMC Faculty, Staff and Students
FROM: Dr. LouAnn Woodward, Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine
SUBJECT: Appointment of Department of Medicine Chair
I am pleased to announce Dr. Michael Hall, professor of medicine, as chair of the Department of Medicine and Patrick H. Lehan Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine, effective September 12, 2022.
Dr. Hall has been serving as interim chair of medicine since March 1, 2022. He took that role following the departure of the previous chair, Dr. Javed Butler.
Dr. Hall, whose professional interests include hypertension, heart failure, advanced cardiovascular imaging, and obesity-induced cardiovascular and renal disease, received his medical degree from the School of Medicine in 2005 at UMMC, where he completed residency training in internal medicine.
After his residency, Dr. Hall participated in the physician-scientist pathway in cardiovascular research in the UMMC Department of Physiology and Biophysics. He also did fellowship training in cardiology at the Medical Center, and had a cardiovascular imaging fellowship at Wake Forest University Health Sciences in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he also earned a master’s degree in clinical and population translational sciences.
At UMMC, Dr. Hall also holds faculty appointments in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, and in the Department of Radiology.
He has assumed many leadership roles, including director of clinical and population science in the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research; associate program director of the Cardiology Fellowship Program; and cardiac imaging director for the Cardiovascular Service Line.
He holds editorial positions with a variety of professional journals and is the lead author or co-author on more than 120 published research manuscripts, as well as a dozen book chapters.
Dr. Hall is an investigator on numerous active NIH research grants. Among his many honors are the 2019 Gold Award for Research, Office of Sponsored Programs; and the 2018 Department of Medicine Exemplary Research Award.
Under Dr. Hall’s interim leadership, the department has thrived and I’m excited for the future of the department and its many divisions with him at the helm. Please join me in congratulating him on this new appointment and supporting him as he transitions from interim into the permanent position.
Thank you.
