Nov. 20, 2025
TO: UMMC Faculty, Staff and Students
FROM: Dr. LouAnn Woodward, Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, Dean, School of Medicine
SUBJECT: Appointment of Interim Chair of Anesthesiology
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Anand Prem, professor of anesthesiology, as UMMC’s interim chair of anesthesiology, effective February 1, 2026
Dr. Prem succeeds Dr. Harendra Arora, who is stepping out of the chair role and will continue as a member of the faculty.
An expert in pain management, Dr. Prem earned his medical degree from St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore, India. He did an internship in general surgery at Sinai Hospital, Detroit Medical Center, Wayne State University, and his anesthesiology residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He also completed a fellowship in pain management at the Henry Ford Medical Center in Detroit.
In December 2008, he joined the Medical Center faculty. During his tenure at UMMC, he has received several honors as a teacher, including the UMMC School of Medicine Trailblazer Teaching Award in 2021, and completed the Millsaps College Business Advantage Program and the Mississippi State Medical Association Leadership Academy.
Dr. Prem is an active member of several committees in national and regional Anesthesiology organizations, is the author or co-author of a variety of book chapters and articles published in professional journals. He has made numerous presentations at national and regional conferences.
While serving as medical director of University Pain Clinic, he supervised its exponential growth and introduced multiple advanced procedures to the practice, facilitating the expansion of the pain fellowship.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Prem to this role. I would also like to thank Dr. Arora for his devotion and service to the department throughout his time as chair.
