Appointment of Chair of Radiology
March 17, 2022
TO:All Faculty, Staff and Students
FROM:Dr. LouAnn Woodward
Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs
Dean, School of Medicine
SUBJECT: Appointment of Chair of Radiology
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Richard Duszak Jr. as UMMC’s new chair of radiology, effective July 1, 2022. He is currently professor and vice chair for health policy and practice in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.
Dr. Duszak will succeed Dr. Edward D. Green, professor of radiology, who has served as interim chair of the department since September 2020. I am grateful for Dr. Green’s leadership during that time.
Dr. Duszak earned his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine before completing his residency in diagnostic radiology at Duke University and his fellowship in interventional radiology at the University of Pennsylvania.
He previously served as president and CEO of West Reading Radiology Associates in West Reading, Pennsylvania, and later as both diagnostic and interventional radiologist at Mid-South Imaging and Therapeutics in Memphis. There, he served as medical director of the Department of Radiology at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven, and director of radiology research at Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation in Memphis.
He was the founding CEO of Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute in Reston, Virginia, where he also served as chief medical officer and senior research fellow, and continues to lead the institute’s Imaging Policy for Analytics for Clinical Transformation (IMPACT) Research Center at Emory.
Dr. Duszak has served as a member of numerous professional committees, task forces, work groups and editorial boards. He is immediate council speaker of the American College of Radiology, and continues to serve as the chancellor overseeing its Radiology Leadership Institute.
Among his numerous honors and awards are the Distinguished Investigator Award from the Academy for Radiology and Biomedical Imaging Research; Achievement Award for Outstanding Dedication to Health Services Research from the Radiology Alliance for Health Services Research; Most Influential Radiology Researcher Award from AuntMinnie.com; and Top People to Watch in Radiology, Annual Lifetime Achievement Award from DiagnosticImaging.com.
He is credited with more than 500 national and international lectureships, seminar appearances and visiting professorships; his national and international abstract presentations number in the hundreds.
Dr. Duszak is the lead author or co-author of more than 200 original research articles and more than 50 review articles in refereed journals. He has co-written several book chapters and is the co-editor of the textbook, Evaluation and Management Coding for Interventional Radiology. He has produced or written more than 20 manuals, videos, computer programs and other teaching aids.
Please join me in thanking Dr. Green for service to the department, and welcoming Dr. Duszak to the role of chair.
Thank you.
