Flu Vaccinations Start This Month
Sept. 30, 2025
TO: All UMMC Faculty, Staff and Students
FROM: Dr. Alan Jones, Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs
SUBJECT: Flu Vaccinations Start This Month
Fall is here and with it an increase in flu infection rates. The best way to protect yourself and others and ensure a healthy workforce through flu season is for each of us to receive our vaccination.
In keeping with our long-standing policy, an annual flu vaccination is required for all faculty, staff and students unless an accommodation or exemption is requested and approved. The deadline to receive a flu vaccination, either by a UMMC or non-UMMC provider, is Nov. 15 for students and Dec. 15 for employees. The Medical Center’s mandatory influenza vaccination policy can be found here. Failure to adhere to the policy could result in corrective action up to and including termination or dismissal.
Institutional influenza vaccination rates of health care personnel are mandatory reported metrics to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which posts these data publicly on their website and uses them for their hospital CMS Star Rating calculations. The Joint Commission includes compliance with our vaccination policies in their survey.
UMMC Student and Employee Health will provide targeted “Flu on Wheels” locations, posted here on the intranet and updated regularly. Flu Blitzes will take place on Oct. 17, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. Also, flu vaccinations are available from 7:30 a.m.- 4:15 p.m. each weekday in N137, the SEH main clinic. To make a flu vaccination appointment, please schedule here or email flu@umc.edu.
