SOPH team wins UMMC Ethics Bowl
The John D. Bower School of Population Health is thrilled to recognize its Ethics Bowl team for earning first place at this year’s University of Mississippi Medical Center Ethics Bowl.
Unlike traditional debates, an Ethics Bowl invites students to collaborate on real-world ethical dilemmas in health care. Teams are evaluated not on winning an argument, but on the clarity of their ethical reasoning, their respect for differing perspectives, and their ability to respond thoughtfully to complex moral questions.
The SOPH team exemplified these values throughout the competition, demonstrating strong ethical analysis, interprofessional insight, and exceptional teamwork. Team members included Dr. Alex Tomar and Dr. Indu Anand, preventive medicine residents, along with Population Health Science PhD students Torrey Robinson, Tasnim Tabassum, Mike Sandifer, and Angie Garrett.
"Participating in the Ethics Bowl was very exciting! It's always great meeting and networking with students from different schools," says Sandifer. "Coming from SOPH, we are usually smaller in numbers, but we are mighty in spirit. I believe our multidisciplinary perspectives of assessing people, communities and health systems benefitted us in acing the Ethics Bowl."
Their performance reflects the core principles of population health: collaboration across disciplines, careful listening, and a commitment to solutions that advance equity, justice, and patient well-being.
SOPH congratulates this outstanding group of students and residents for representing the school with professionalism, integrity, and thoughtful leadership in ethical decision-making.
