Population Health Science programs for 2026

The Department of Population Health Science continues to refine its academic offerings to better meet the needs of students pursuing careers in research, policy, health systems, and community leadership. Beginning in fall 2026, the MS in Population Health Science offers greater flexibility and an anaccelerated pathway to completion.

Students will be able to complete the MS in Population Health Science in as little as one year by earning all the credit hours across three consecutive semesters. This accelerated option is designed for students who want to move quickly into the workforce or doctoral study while maintaining rigorous training in population health methods and practice.

The MS program offers two distinct pathways. The research track is designed for students interested in advanced analysis, scholarly publication, and preparation for PhD training. The leadership track emphasizes applied skills, systems thinking and decision- making for roles in health organizations, government and community-based settings. Both tracks share a strong foundation in epidemiology, biostatistics and population health theory while allowing students to tailor their coursework to career goals.

The PhD in Population Health Science remains focused on advanced research training, interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of independent scholars. Doctoral students continue to benefit from close faculty mentorship, access to real world data and engagement with community and clinical partners across Mississippi. Coursework and milestones remain aligned with timely degree completion and strong preparation for academic, research and leadership careers.

Together, these Population Health Science programs reflect SOPH’s commitment to flexible, high-quality training that responds to student needs and evolving workforce demands while staying grounded in the mission to improve population health and reduce health disparities.
