Celebrating cultures and traditions at the SOPH Cultural Potluck

The John D. Bower School of Population Health is a community defined by its makeup, and nothing showcased that vibrant tapestry more than the recent SOPH Cultural Potluck.

Students, faculty, and their families gathered to share the flavors, fashions, and folklore of their home countries and cultures, creating an afternoon of rich cultural exchange and delicious cuisine. From the savory biryani of Bangladesh to the hearty cabbage rolls of Poland, the event was a true feast for the senses.

"The Cultural Potluck was a remarkable celebration of the backgrounds and traditions that make our SOPH community so unique," said Dr. Tasnova Malek, SOPH Student Body Vice President and the event's organizer. "It was wonderful to see everyone come together to honor and learn from one another."

In addition to the mouthwatering array of dishes, the event featured colorful cultural attire and captivating storytelling about home nations. Attendees had the chance to immerse themselves in the diverse perspectives and lived experiences that enrich the Bower School.

"The Bower School has more countries represented than any other school on the UMMC campus; it's crucial that we create spaces to uplift and celebrate our community's vibrant heritage," explained Dr. Victoria Gholar, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. "The potluck was the perfect platform for doing just that."

Beyond the tangible delights, the event fostered a profound sense of unity and shared purpose. Though the students, faculty, and staff hailed from countries across the world, they were united in their commitment to improving population health through collaborative, cross-cultural approaches.

"This experience reminded me of the incredible strength that comes from the variety of our cultures," said McKing Amedari, SOPH Student Body President. "I can't wait to see how we build on this momentum and come together again next year."

Indeed, the Bower School community is already looking forward to hosting the Cultural Potluck in 2025. As the school continues to grow in size and global representation, the annual celebration will undoubtedly become an even more vibrant and cherished tradition.
