Celebrating connection: SOPH student and faculty events
From welcoming new faces to celebrating shared milestones, this fall semester at the John D. Bower School of Population Health was filled with events that brought together students, faculty and staff to strengthen community and showcase the school’s vibrant culture.

Student Welcome and Orientation – “Get Into the Rhythm of Population Health”
The semester began with an upbeat start as SOPH welcomed new and returning students, guided by the theme “Get into the Rhythm of Population Health.” Orientation featured introductions from school leadership, engaging activities and community-building exercises designed to help students find their rhythm as future population health scientists and practitioners.
Interprofessional Education Campus Welcome and Well-Being Block Party
SOPH students joined peers from across UMMC for the Interprofessional Education Campus Welcome and Well-Being Block Party—a fun, collaborative event emphasizing connection, wellness and teamwork across disciplines. The event highlighted how interprofessional collaboration drives innovation in healthcare education and delivery.
Faculty Appreciation Week
During Faculty Appreciation Week, SOPH paused to honor the dedication, mentorship and innovation of its faculty. A morning of pastries and coffee provided an opportunity to express gratitude to those who shape the next generation of population health professionals with both passion and rigor.
Wear Pink in October
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, SOPH students, faculty, and staff proudly wore pink to show support for those affected by breast cancer and to promote awareness about the importance of early detection and preventive care – key pillars of population health.
Spooky U at the Student Union
Adding a seasonal twist, SOPH joined in on the fun at Spooky U, a campus-wide Halloween celebration featuring costumes, candy and community spirit. Students and faculty embraced the festivities while strengthening connections beyond the classroom.
Together, these events reflect SOPH’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, engaging environment where learning, collaboration and community thrive.
