Dean's welcome
Dear Colleagues, Students, and Friends of the Bower School of Population Health,
As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I'm filled with gratitude for the time and accomplishments we have shared together at the John D. Bower School of Population Health. This season of giving thanks is the perfect time to reflect on the exciting developments happening within our community and to look ahead to the bright future that lies before us.
The Bower School of Population Health continues to grow as a hub for innovation and leadership in tackling the most pressing health challenges faced by our state and region. I am proud to be part of a team that is making meaningful strides in research, education, and community impact – all with a spirit of friendship, collaboration, and a deep commitment to improving the health of Mississippians.
First, I am thrilled to announce that Dr. Bernadette Grayson has joined the Dean's Suite as our new Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs. Dr. Grayson, with her extensive experience and unwavering dedication to advancing population health, will work alongside Assistant Dean Dr. Victoria Gholar and myself to shape the academic and professional landscape for our students and faculty. Her expertise in metabolic health and her passion for student success make her an invaluable addition to our leadership team.
In addition to this leadership expansion, our programs are thriving. Our students and faculty are engaged in groundbreaking research and initiatives aimed at reducing health disparities across Mississippi. Our work to eliminate congenital syphilis is emblematic of population health scientists at SOPH making a tangible difference in the lives of families - a true testament to the power of what we can accomplish together.
As we gather with loved ones this Thanksgiving, I am reminded of the strength that comes from our shared purpose and the deep friendships that sustain us. Looking ahead, we are preparing to launch new programs and partnerships that will further expand our impact. In 2025, we plan to introduce initiatives that will enhance experiential learning opportunities for our students, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen our ties with community health organizations across the state. Our goal is to ensure that our students graduate with the skills, knowledge, and compassion needed to lead positive change in the health of Mississippians.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our mission. Together, we are setting the gold standard in population health, and I am excited about the work we will accomplish in the coming year. Wishing you and your loved ones a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving.
Warm regards,
Thomas Dobbs, MD, MPH
