Unlocking insights for a healthier Mississippi: SOPH hosts census data workshop
The John D. Bower School of Population Health recently hosted a timely and informative workshop focused on "Census Data Usage and the Use for Population Health Science." This online training provided SOPH students and faculty with valuable insights into utilizing Census data to inform population health research and interventions.
The workshop highlighted the importance of understanding social determinants of health (SDOH), the social and economic factors that influence health outcomes. Participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the rich data available from the U.S. Census Bureau, encompassing topics such as socioeconomic status, housing conditions, transportation access, and environmental factors.
Led by experienced data experts, the workshop went beyond theory, offering hands-on exercises that equipped attendees with the skills to access and analyze these datasets effectively. This practical approach ensured participants left with the tools necessary to conduct robust and impactful research, further empowering them to address critical health disparities in Mississippi.
By leveraging the power of Census data, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of the factors that influence health outcomes in specific communities. This knowledge can inform the development of targeted interventions, promote health equity, and ultimately lead to better health outcomes for all Mississippians. The workshop showcased the Bower School's commitment to providing its students and faculty with the tools they need to make a real difference in the health of our communities.
