Chief Financial Officer
Nelson Weichold was appointed Chief Financial Officer in 2019. He is responsible for all financial planning and strategic planning functions of the medical center, physician group and schools.
For more than 20 years, Nelson has worked for teaching hospitals and academic medical centers in financial, operational and strategic management capacities, where he has assisted with short and long-term financial planning and capital investment decisions to improve organizational financial strength. As a management consultant, he advised multispecialty physician practices on incentive compensation planning and universities on affiliation and funds flow arrangements across the tri-partite missions of education, research and patient care.
Nelson’s responsibilities have included general accounting, treasury management, patient revenue cycle, supply chain, payer relations, business intelligence, strategic management and health care patient operations. Prior to working for UMMC, he held senior management positions at the University of Miami Health System and at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He served as a consultant with ECG Management Consultants, a firm that specializes in the business operations of academic medical centers and held financial roles at Tulane Hospital, Hermann Hospital and the UAB Health System.
Nelson earned a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from Miami University and a master’s degree in health and hospital administration from Tulane University. Concurrent to completing these degrees, he served as an administrative resident at Good Samaritan Hospital (Cincinnati) and West Jefferson General Hospital (New Orleans).
