When opioids are prescribed for short-term acute pain, it’s too easy for some patients to quickly become addicted. That can spiral out of control, potentially costing them jobs, families and quality of life. Medical Center physicians are working to give patients alternatives to opioids, such as acupuncture, physical therapy and non-opioid medications, in the hope of averting addiction before it can take hold.
Dr. Timothy Allen, a Texas native who joined the Medical Center in January as the new chair of pathology, also has worked as a deputy medical examiner and as an attorney. His way of thinking was shaped by his teachers in high school, undergraduate school, medical school and law school. But perhaps his most influential teacher of all was in his own home.
