Dr. Charles S. O’Mara joined the Medical Center in August 2013 as a special advisor to the vice chancellor, after a long and distinguished career as a vascular surgeon and leader in the private medical community in Jackson. He was appointed to his current post in 2014.
During his tenure at UMMC, O’Mara has fostered a culture for consistently delivering quality health care, as well as creating institutional platforms to promote patient safety. His relationships with physicians and hospitals throughout the state have served him well in efforts to promote collaborations to use limited health care resources wisely. He continues a limited practice in vascular surgery.
O’Mara is a native of Jackson and a graduate of the University of Mississippi. He earned his medical degree at Tulane and completed his surgical residency at Johns Hopkins, where he was chief resident. He completed his vascular surgery fellowship at Northwestern University, returned to serve on the surgical faculty at Hopkins, and then came back home to Jackson. He has won many honors both in training and in practice and has built an impressive record of research and scholarship. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and holds an MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas.
O’Mara and his wife Susan live in Ridgeland and have four children and nine grandchildren. His personal interests include various outdoor activities, the visual arts, adventure travel, and activities with his grandchildren.
