Interim Dean of the School of Health Related Professions
Angela Burrell was appointed interim dean of the School of Health Related Professions on June 1, 2022. She is responsible for overseeing five departments with 19 programs on the bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, certificate and residency levels. She is also chair and associate professor of the Department of Health Administration. Burrell came to the medical center as a registered nurse in the Department of Radiology and later served as a nurse manager. She joined the faculty as an adjunct in 2010 and later became a fulltime assistant professor, program coordinator, and program director of DHA. In 2019, she was a Nelson Order of Teaching Excellence recipient.
Burrell, who grew up in Utica, was born to parents who worked in healthcare. Her mother retired from UMMC after 30 years, and her father from the GV Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center. She worked in the student summer program at UMMC through high school and college and began her nursing career after earning a bachelor’s from Mississippi College, a master’s in nursing (education) from UMMC, and a doctor of philosophy in nursing education and administration from William Carey University.
She has authored two grants and conducted and presented research on various topics including women in academic medicine, support and professional development of adjunct faculty, national online course standards and student satisfaction, student cohesion in distance learning programs, and designing collaborative web-based capstone courses.
Dr. Burrell serves on the board of directors and as the higher education network representative for the Mississippi Healthcare Executives, a state chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
