Celebrating student engagement
This academic year, the John D. Bower School of Population Health (SOPH) has hosted a range of events designed to foster student wellness, community engagement, and interprofessional connections. From wellness workshops to seasonal celebrations, SOPH students have had numerous opportunities to connect, unwind, and enjoy their time at UMMC. Here’s a look back at some of the memorable events so far.
Going for the Gold: 2024 Student Welcome and Orientation
Kicking off the year with an inspiring start, SOPH’s 2024 Student Welcome and Orientation embraced the theme “Going for the Gold,” inspired by the Summer Olympics in Paris. The theme reflects SOPH’s commitment to setting the gold standard in population health. New and returning students heard from UMMC leaders and key departments, including campus police, the Office of Student Affairs, and the Office of the Ombuds. These presentations highlighted the vast resources available to support students, ensuring a successful and fulfilling academic experience.
A Succulent Soirée
In a refreshing twist on student wellness, SOPH hosted “A Succulent Soirée,” inviting students to take a break and focus on their well-being. With an afternoon snack, engaging conversations, and a chance to take home a succulent plant, the event underscored the importance of connecting with nature to reduce stress and boost overall wellness. As the invitation said, “Let’s grow together!”—an idea that resonated with everyone who attended.
Interprofessional Education (IPE) Campus Welcome and Well-being Block Party
On September 12, UMMC students gathered for the Interprofessional Education Campus Welcome and Well-being Block Party. The event, held in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union, brought together students from multiple disciplines to learn about well-being resources on campus. With games, healthy snacks, massage stations, and plenty of prizes, the Block Party was a hit. Students mingled with IPE staff and campus vendors while competing in bingo, enjoying free ice cream, and even entering to win a reserved parking space for a month.
SpookyU and Jack-o’-Lantern Carving
SOPH students got into the Halloween spirit with SpookyU and jack-o’-lantern carving! During UMMC Student Life’s SpookyU event, SOPH joined in the fun by handing out treats to the children of UMMC employees. The festivities continued with a pumpkin-picking and carving session where students created their own jack-o’-lanterns. It was a spook-tacular way for students to relax, embrace the season, and showcase their creativity.
From orientation to seasonal celebrations, these events have brought the SOPH community closer together, providing spaces to learn, connect, and unwind. We’re excited to see what the rest of the academic year has in store!
