May observances include brain, bladder, skin cancers

May focuses on cancer awareness efforts that promote prevention, early detection and survivorship.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States with nearly 5 million people treated each year. Regular skin checks and sun-safe behaviors such as using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing and avoiding indoor tanning can significantly reduce risk. Early detection leads to high cure rates for most skin cancers.

Brain Cancer Awareness Month

More than 25,000 malignant brain and spinal cord tumors are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Symptoms vary but may include headaches, seizures, vision changes and difficulty with balance or memory. Awareness helps encourage timely evaluation and advances in research and treatment.

Bladder Cancer Awareness Month

Bladder cancer is among the 10 most common cancers in the United States. It occurs more often in older adults and is about three times more common in men than women. Early signs can include blood in the urine and frequent or painful urination. Early diagnosis improves treatment options and outcomes.
