October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a vital time to emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in combating this disease. At the University of Mississippi Medical Center, innovative research is at the forefront of our mission, fueled by new recruits in both research and clinical practice, that are highlighted in this month’s Director’s Cut.

Empowering awareness: October's focus on breast cancer

October serves as an important reminder to shine a light on breast cancer prevention, research and treatment.

Dr. Seema Singh named associate director of education and training

Dr. Seema Singh is the new associate director of education and training for the Cancer Center and Research Institute (CCRI). In this role, Singh will develop and lead a new Cancer Biology track in the graduate program, driving innovation and shaping the next generation of cancer scientists. She will also oversee the development and management of mentoring and educational activities, fostering growth and interdisciplinary collaborations to advance cancer research.

UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute’s lung cancer screening program secures $1.8 million grant

The UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute received a QUILS (Quality Implementation of Lung Cancer Screening) grant, which focuses on improving lung cancer screening rates in Mississippi.

Dr. Jawed A. Siddiqui named new assistant professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

Dr. Jawed A. Siddiqui, a Cancer Center and Research Institute (CCRI) member, recently joined the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, School of Medicine, as an assistant professor.

Dr. Prashant Yarlagadda named new instructor of radiation oncology

Dr. Prashant Yarlagadda was named as a new instructor of radiation oncology. In this role, he will serve as junior attending physician, managing the diagnosis and treatment of patients requiring radiation oncology services, as well as providing education and training to residents and medical students.

Recent publications

Chronic stress can negatively impact human health by disrupting hormonal balance in the body. Previous studies have shown increased levels of cortisol, a key stress hormone, along with certain exosomal microRNAs in the serum of breast cancer patients.
