Dr. Prashant Yarlagadda named new instructor of radiation oncology

Dr. Prashant Yarlagadda was named a new instructor of radiation oncology. In this role, he will serve as a junior attending physician, managing the diagnosis and treatment of patients requiring radiation oncology services, as well as providing education and training to residents and medical students.

Previously, Yarlagadda served as a resident at Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute in Hyderabad and a senior resident at Guntur Medical College. Additionally, has served as a fellow in Precision Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.

Building on this extensive clinical experience, Yarlagadda has developed an impressive research career in oncology, focusing on innovative studies related to cancer treatment and drug delivery systems. Research includes investigating the effects of iodine on breast cancer cells, revealing varied impacts across different cell lines, and developing a magnetic drug delivery system for targeted treatments. Additional work involves creating a database to compare surgical outcomes for esophageal cancer with national averages, assessing the effectiveness of different breast irradiation methods, and evaluating acoustic neuroma treatments to enhance local awareness.

He has shared research findings at over 50 conferences and has been a prominent speaker on cancer treatment updates and awareness at numerous medical and educational events.

“Radiation Oncology has seen many new technological advances in the past few years and University of Mississippi Medical Center is investing in bringing these new technologies to the citizens of Mississippi,” said Yarlagadda. “I am extremely excited in being a part of this initiative by the University of Mississippi Medical Center.”

Yarlagadda's extensive background in radiation oncology includes a fellowship in Precision Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He completed his training in Radiation Oncology at Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute in Hyderabad, earning a Diplomate of National Board degree. Additionally, he holds a Master of Science in Cancer Biology from Louisiana Technological University in Ruston, Louisiana.
