Welcome to the first edition of the Director’s Cut. The monthly newsletter will serve as a point of reflection, as well as a conduit for vital updates regarding all things cancer at UMMC. It will also incorporate our triune mission of clinical, research, and educational endeavors.

Revolutionizing cancer treatments: CAR-T therapy brings hope to chemo-resistant patients

Sistrunk named to new leadership post

Heather Sistrunk is the administrative director of cancer clinical affairs at the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Cancer Center and Research Institute (CCRI).

New faculty spotlight: Meet Dr. Jasmine M. Miller-Kleinhenz

Dr. Jasmine M. Miller-Kleinhenz, CCRI member and assistant professor for the John D. Bower School of Population Health, has an undeniable passion for uncovering factors that contribute to cancer health disparities.

New publications

Dr. Pier Paolo Claudio and other researchers recently conducted a randomized clinical trial to see whether chemotherapy protocols guided by ChemoID would enhance the response rate among patients with recurrent platinum-resistant epithelial ovarian cancer. ChemoID is a diagnostic functional assay that helps treatment decisions by testing the sensitivity of CSCs to different chemotherapy drugs.

Grants

Dr. Keli Xu, CCRI member and associate professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, was recently awarded an R01 grant, a highly competitive research grant viewed as the gold standard in biomedical research, from the National Cancer Institute.

Office of Development prepares to launch silent phase of CCRI Capital Campaign

The CCRI Capital Campaign is dedicated to the first step of UMMC’s CCRI plan which is to build a new state-of-the-art facility. The Office of Development (OOD) has been working diligently to help make this first step come to fruition. (Pictured is Lauren Engle.)
