July is Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness Month

July highlights awareness for sarcoma and bone cancer, two rare but serious cancers that can affect people of all ages. Sarcomas develop in bones or soft tissues such as muscle, fat and blood vessels and include many different subtypes.

Key facts

  • Sarcomas account for about 1% of adult cancers but nearly 15% of childhood cancers.
  • Bone cancer is most often diagnosed in children, teens and young adults, though it can occur at any age.
  • Early symptoms may include a painless lump, swelling or bone pain that does not go away and can worsen at night.
  • Treatment often involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, with outcomes improving when cancers are found early.
