February observances include prevention, gallbladder

February shines a spotlight on cancer prevention and lesser-known cancers, reminding us that awareness, education and early action can save lives.

National Cancer

Prevention Month

Observed throughout February, this month emphasizes steps everyone can take to reduce cancer risk. According to the American Cancer Society, about 40% of cancers and nearly half of cancer deaths are linked to preventable risk factors, such as tobacco use, poor diet, physical inactivity, excess alcohol use and lack of recommended screenings. Healthy lifestyle choices, vaccinations like HPV and hepatitis B, and routine screening play a critical role in prevention and early detection.

World Cancer Day – Feb. 4

World Cancer Day is a global initiative to raise awareness, improve education and encourage action against cancer. The day highlights the importance of equitable access to prevention, screening, treatment, and survivorship care for all.

Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer Awareness Month

These rare but serious cancers are often diagnosed at later stages because symptoms can be vague or overlooked. Raising awareness can help people recognize warning signs — such as abdominal pain, jaundice, or unexplained weight loss — and seek care sooner.

This February, we encourage our community to learn more about cancer prevention, stay up to date on recommended screenings, and talk with a health care provider about ways to reduce cancer risk.
