November Observances: Cancer care in the spotlight
November highlights awareness of cancer biomarkers as well as carcinoid tumors and cancers of the pancreas, lungs and stomach.
Cancer Biomarker Awareness Day
The Cancer Center and Research Institute at UMMC and the Cancer Precision Medicine Commons observed the inaugural Cancer Biomarker Awareness Day, a nationwide effort to educate and empower patients, caregivers and the public about the crucial role biomarkers play in the fight against cancer.
In cancer, biomarkers are abnormal changes in a cell that cause cancer to survive and grow. Biomarkers can be used to determine whether a disease or condition is present, determine how aggressive the disease is and predict how well the body will respond to a treatment.
Clinicians, advocates, patients, and communities all play a role in supporting timely testing and equitable access to these vital diagnostics.
Genetic Counseling Appreciation Day
Genetic Counseling Appreciation Day, observed annually on Nov. 13, highlighted the vital role genetic counselors play in cancer care. These professionals offer compassionate guidance, empower patients with knowledge about hereditary cancer risks, and support informed decision-making for individuals and families. Since its launch in 2017 by the National Society of Genetic Counselors, this day has evolved from Genetic Counselor Awareness Day into a celebration of the expertise, leadership, and empathy that genetic counselors bring to oncology settings and beyond.
Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
This observance aims to increase awareness about pancreatic cancer, which is known for its high mortality rate and often late diagnosis. Efforts include educational campaigns and fundraising for research.
Lung Cancer Awareness Month
November is also dedicated to lung cancer awareness, focusing on prevention, early detection, and treatment options. Organizations like the American Lung Association promote initiatives to educate the public about lung cancer risks and encourage screenings.
Stomach Cancer Awareness Month
This month highlights the importance of recognizing the symptoms of stomach cancer, which can often be overlooked. Awareness campaigns aim to educate the public about risk factors and the need for early detection.
Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Month
Carcinoid tumors are a type of neuroendocrine tumor, and November serves to raise awareness about this less common cancer, its symptoms, and treatment options.
National Family Caregivers Month
Behind every patient’s journey stands a caregiver offering strength, compassion, and tireless support. November honors the more than 53 million family caregivers across the country who provide essential care for loved ones.
