Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the US. Additionally, it shows notable racial disparities in health outcomes.

Dr. Seema Singh and co-authors, Dr. Sarabjeet Kour Sudan, Dr. Amod Sharma, and Dr. Kunwar Somesh Vikramdeo, conducted a study of 1,085 patients with breast cancer to develop strategies to narrow existing disparity gaps. A total of 499 patients were obese (46%), with Black women with obesity being diagnosed with breast cancer more frequently than White women (OR, 2.40; 95% CI, 1.87-3.15; Pā€‰<ā€‰.001).

Overall, the findings suggest that Black women with obesity show an increased risk of early onset and diagnoses of luminal A and triple-negative breast cancer subtypes, and that obesity is a major risk factor contributing to the observed differences in the age of breast cancer onset.
