Cancer Center and Research Institute and American Cancer Society team up to support cancer patients

The Cancer Center and Research Institute is collaborating with the American Cancer Society to pilot a new program aimed at providing non-clinical support for cancer patients and their caregivers. The ACS CARES (Community Access to Resources, Education and Support) program, which is supported by a funding initiative of $25,000, is currently underway and will continue through July 2025.

"We're so excited to be a part of this amazing program to assist our cancer patients," said Barbara Herring, nurse practitioner in oncology.

The program includes local college students from Jackson State University and Millsaps College who will serve as volunteer patient navigators. The volunteers will work closely with the neuro-oncology and breast oncology clinics, as well as social workers, to identify and address various barriers to care, including transportation, housing and educational needs.

The students will meet one-on-one with patients to assess their needs and coordinate assistance with the clinical team, to ensure patients receive the comprehensive care and support they need throughout their treatment journey.

“Life can be stressful and difficult when a person is well, but receiving a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming,” said Herring. “Connecting patients with resources from ACS's extensive national network and local agencies will help to lessen some of the burdens associated with navigating cancer treatment.”
