Academic technology and innovation update
Published on Monday, March 18, 2024
Active, engaged learners retain knowledge longer than passive learners. Academic technology tools utilized within a solid instructional design framework provide opportunities to engage learners in synchronous and asynchronous learning environments. This spring, faculty members have two new tools to integrate polling tools and rich, instructional videos into course content through Slido and JoVE.
Slido
Bring active learning into your synchronous classroom using Slido embedded into PowerPoint. Slido is an interactive polling tool that allows for real-time voting using rank order, rating icons (stars or faces), multiple choice, word cloud, open-ended response, or quizzing. For information on how to use Slido, visit the “How-to Manuals” in the SON’s SharePoint site.
JoVE
Want to embed quality video demonstrations into your course content? JoVE (Journal of Visual Experiments) contains a treasure trove of peer-reviewed instructional videos. Many JoVE videos are less than two minutes and focus on a specific topic. For example, under “Pharmacokinetics” there are twenty different illustrated videos detailing the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination process. Access to the videos is provided by Rowland Medical Library.
Here is a list of Nursing, Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology and Health Science videos available for faculty and students. Contact Sarah Adcock in the library or Dr. Carley Dear if you have any questions about JoVE.
