Message from Dean Sanford

Greetings from the School of Nursing! We are happy to restart the publication of our monthly newsletter post-COVID (if there is such a thing) and hope that you find it informative and helpful.

The National League for Nursing will induct Dr. Julie Sanford, dean of the School of Nursing, and Dr. LaDonna Northington, who recently retired as associate dean of academic affairs, as members of the 2022 Class of Fellows in the Academy of Nursing Education. They are among the 20 named nationally for the honor.

ABNF Honors

The Association of Black Nursing Faculty (ABNF) has honored SON faculty members Dr. Marilyn Harrington, associate professor of nursing and assistant dean for DEI, and Dr. Audwin Fletcher, professor of nursing, assistant dean for graduate programs and director of AGACNP and AGPCNP tracks.

Center for Telehealth, School of Nursing team up for school-based telehealth training

The UMMC Center for Telehealth and School of Nursing are working together to provide health care to more students in the state’s kindergarten-12th grade schools. The outreach, funded by a $17.6 million grant from the Mississippi Department of Education, will begin in Pearl, Yazoo County, Quitman and McComb school districts this week. Thirty more school districts will gain those services by Nov. 1.

‘The best day of my life’: Rural-focused outreach captivates the future hope of health care

It has been an eventful summer of enrichment for young learners in Mississippi, thanks to several Medical Center outreach programs. The latest, Mosaic, concentrated on high school students from the state’s rural areas, where the need for improved access to care is profound.

‘Life-changing’ MSN courses begin May 31 for UMMC Bower scholars

The first group of RN-to-MSN students gaining graduate education through a $3.8 million Bower Foundation grant will start classes at the School of Nursing at UMMC May 31. The students from across the state were on campus Tuesday and Wednesday to meet faculty and see the Medical Center campus.

Nurse Honor Guard

How do you say “thank you” to a nurse at the end of life who’s given countless hours to a calling? For members of the Mississippi Nurse Honor Guard, they pay their respects at nurses’ memorial services around the state. Nurses at UMMC and in the SON at UMMC are among those who honor their fellow nursing professionals.
