Message from the Dean
After concluding a busy fall semester and celebrating our school's 75 years, we will begin a pivotal time in nursing education as our profession moves toward competency-based education. We are preparing for this transition. Our strategic plan will guide us throughout 2025 so that we can better prepare our graduates to provide safe, quality care in a complex and evolving health care system.
Our strategic plan has four strategic priorities representing each part of our mission: education, research, practice and service.
- Prepare and sustain a competent nursing workforce to achieve health equity
- Cultivate an inclusive SON community reflecting the populations we serve to promote health and well-being
- Strengthen mutually beneficial local to global partnerships for transforming health care
- Accelerate creative inquiry to advance nursing science with translation for improving health
It is so exciting to see our mission of developing nursing leaders in real time. Our UMMC students attended the annual Mississippi Association of Nursing Students (MASN) meeting at the Mississippi Nurses Association Convention held in October, where several were elected to leadership positions. In this newsletter, you will learn more about these students and their experiences. A special thanks to the faculty advisors, Dr. Tara Price, Dr. Lindy Sills and Allison Princiotta. Without their commitment and dedication, our chapter would not be successful. Dr. Tara Price also serves as the faculty advisor for MASN.
Have a wonderful holiday season and please enjoy this newsletter highlighting the wonderful accomplishments of our SON. I am grateful to be part of the UMMC School of Nursing and to each of you for supporting the SON.
Best Wishes,
Tina Martin, PhD, FNP-BC
