DNP student selected to Student Policy Summit in DC
Last month, DNP student Mwendaendi Lewanika-Anderson and PhD in Nursing Student Gordon Gartrell attended the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Student Policy Summit in Washington, DC. Students who attend participate in extensive sessions focused on the federal policy process and nursing’s role in professional advocacy. After completing the health policy course in the fall, Mwendaendi stated that she wanted to understand better how policy impacts nursing practice and how she can make a difference in her community. She shared her gratitude for this opportunity and that attending this conference impacted her outlook on nursing policy. “I want to tell others who are unaware of the impact nurses make on policy," explained Lewanika-Anderson. "If you don't make decisions, someone else will make them for you. My community needs me at the table of decision-makers. The system is changing, and I want to be a part of that change.”
