McElwain elected vice president of MS nursing council
Dr. Sharon McElwain, associate professor and assistant dean for undergraduate programs, was elected vice president of the Mississippi Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Nursing Programs Council. This council is a standing committee of the Mississippi Council of Deans and Directors of Schools of Nursing. Congratulations to Dr. McElwain and we are proud of your service to the state's nursing schools!
Douglas elected to UMMC Academy Leadership
Dr. Kim Douglas, associate professor and director of the nurse educator track, was elected to serve as Chair of the Strategy and Planning Committee for the Academy for Excellence in Education at UMMC. She joins four other UMMC faculty members on the leadership team for 2022-23. The Academy was formed earlier this fall by the UMMC Office of Academic Affairs. Over 20 School of Nursing faculty members were inducted as inaugural members including Dr. Douglas. We are proud of all your accomplishments and leadership for the Academy!
Risley published article in Cancer Medicine Journal
Dr. Carolann Risley, associate professor, joint first authored an article in the Cancer Medicine journal. The article titled "Post-kidney transplant cancers: Racial and ethnic differences in sun-exposed skin versus non-sun-exposed angogenital skin," was a collaboration with researchers from East Carolina University, UMMC, and the Walter Reed Military Medical Center. The goal of the research was to evaluate post-kidney transplant cancer cases and sites in target population to guide screening recommendations.
Klamm presents podium at Sigma Region 8 conference
Assistant Professor Melissa Klamm was selected to present at the podium during the Virtual Region 8 Conference earlier this fall. The title of her presentation was "Plato's Cave: Teaching Health Promotion Principles through Philosophical Allegory." Her work focused on an innovative teaching strategy for health promotion and patient education in a concept-based accelerated BSN program. The purpose of her presentation was to describe how nursing instructors can use philosophical allegory to teach students about individualized health promotion strategies that may lead to improved patient outcomes.
Faculty receive CNE certification
Congratulations to Assistant Professor and Director of the Accelerated BSN Program Chelsey Andries, DNP, RN, CPN, CNE; Assistant Professor and Director of the RN-MSN Program Tina Ferrell, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, CNE; Instructor Lisa Hosey, MSN, RN, CNE; and Assistant Professor Amanda Weeks, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, CHSE, CNE who obtained the prestigious Certified Nurse Educator certification this fall! They join fellow faculty members Dr. Kimberly Douglas, Dr. Angela Duck, Marlie Farrar, Rachel Gambill, Dr. Katie Hall, Emeritae faculty Dr. Jennifer Robinson, Dr. Christy Savell, Dr. Eva Tatum, and Lesley Thweatt with the CNE credentials.
Lopez-Lambert receives CHSE certification
Congratulations to Eloise Lopez-Lambert, DNP, RN, BC, CHSE for passing her Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) certification through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. She joins fellow UMMC SON faculty members Joe Farmer, part-time faculty Dr. Alaina Herrington, Hannah Hogg, Dr. Robyn MacSorley, and Dr. Amanda Weeks with this certification.
