UMMC - Group on Women in Medicine and Science
Welcome to GWIMS
Welcome to the UMMC GWIMS! The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) Group of Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS) is a local organization affiliated with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). This organization emerged in response to the growing presence of women in medicine and the continued momentum of the civil rights and women's liberation movements. It was launched to identify barriers and develop strategies to increase the number of women entering medicine and to provide support for education and career advancement. In 2009, the name was changed to GWIMS, reflecting a broader commitment to supporting the full participation of women across the academic medicine continuum.
The local UMMC-GWIMS chapter supports the mission of the AAMC to lead and serve academic medicine to improve the health of people everywhere. The AAMC mission areas include:
- Medical Education: Strengthening training programs, supporting faculty, staff, learners, and leaders, and advancing competency-based education.
- Clinical Care: Fostering innovation, supporting excellence in care delivery, and ensuring all patients have access to high-quality, affordable care within academic health systems and teaching hospitals.
- Biomedical Research: Driving scientific discovery, supporting research breakthroughs, and advocating for academic medicine.
- Community Collaborations: Collaborating with communities across clinical, research, and educational missions to address public health needs, health equity, and community-based health disparities.
