September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month

September marks Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of early detection and prevention. Gynecologic cancers, which affect various parts of the female reproductive system including the cervix, ovaries, uterus, vagina, and vulva, pose a significant health risk to anyone with female reproductive organs.
The National Cancer Institute estimates that over 108,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer in 2024. This statistic underscores the continuing need for awareness and early detection efforts in combating these cancers.

“I strongly encourage women to maintain their health and wellness by seeing a gynecologist annually for exams,” said Dr. Mildred Ridgway, professor for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and chief for the Division of Gynecologic Oncology. “Along with routine exams, recommended screening and HPV vaccination, women can reduce their risk of GYN cancer significantly.”

“Awareness and early detection is vital in preventing and decreasing the risk of gynecologic cancers.,” said Bethany Sabins, nurse practitioner in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology. “I encourage women to be their biggest advocate, and to ask questions, learn about gynecological cancers, and get their exams and pap smears when indicated.”
