Dr. Sarabjeet Kour Sudan joins the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

Dr. Sarabjeet Kour Sudan recently joined the Cancer Center Research Institute (CCRI) as an instructor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology.

In her role, Sudan will conduct cutting-edge research to advance cancer biology and focus on cancer health disparities, the social experiences that affect human physiology and tumor biology. Her specific research interest lies in understanding how social experiences affect human physiology, thereby influencing people’s risk of developing cancer at an early age and being diagnosed with specific molecular subtypes.

She is excited to work in an outstanding collaborative environment at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. “I plan to develop new multidisciplinary research projects and seek extramural funding to support our new ideas,” said Sudan. “Additionally, I am dedicated to teaching and mentoring students and serving our communities through participation in awareness programs.”

Previously, she served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pathology at the University of South Alabama and held both senior and junior research fellow positions at the Institute of Microbial Technology, which is part of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Chandigarh, India. With a strong commitment to mentoring, she has guided over a dozen undergraduate, medical and graduate students, showcasing her dedication to education and fostering the next generation of researchers.

Sudan earned a PhD in life sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a Master of Science in biotechnology from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. She completed her postdoctoral training in cancer biology with a focus on health disparities at the University of South Alabama.

During her doctoral studies, she focused on metagenomics to explore thermostable enzymes from unique geographical niches, earning recognition for her academic achievements with a prestigious award from the honorable president and prime minister of India. In her postdoctoral work, she gained valuable insights into cancer biology and developed a strong interest in cancer health disparities. Furthermore, she has coauthored 17 manuscripts and presented numerous abstracts at scientific conferences, contributing significantly to her field.

”I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research and make a meaningful impact on patient care,” said Sudan. “Being part of a team that is dedicated to improving outcomes for all patients fuels my enthusiasm each day.”
