Program Description

The Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute (MEWI) for the Elimination of Health Disparities offers an immersive internship experience for highly motivated, driven, and focused students seeking to further explore health careers and interests in health equity, health care disparities, and population health. Interns will work alongside health providers, researchers, or professionals to enhance awareness, skills, and experience in areas critical to improving patient outcomes and the overall health of underserved and special populations. Interns may receive a stipend to cover allowable expenses. The amount is disclosed during the selection phase.

Criteria

Interested students must meet and agree to the following:

  • Be 18 years of age and older and eligible to work in the United States
  • Be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited college or university and in good academic standing
  • Complete the application and submit requested materials
  • Have no criminal history (background checks may be required)
  • Interns may work one semester and a minimum of eight (8) weeks or 80 hours but no more than twelve (12) weeks or 120 hours.
  • If selected, agree to complete the mid-point and final feedback and evaluation form

Application Guidelines

Interested students must complete the application form and submit requested materials at least 60 days prior to the start of the semester in which they seek to participate in the internship program. Program staff will review all applications and notify selected students within 30 days that materials are received.

For non-UMMC Students: If participation in this Internship is a requirement for an academic course, please contact the Office of Academic Affiliations. Please note that this process takes up to eight (8) weeks for approval prior to the start of the requested placement.
