Department of Preventive Medicine Residency Training

The mission of the Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Residency in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is to equip physicians with the necessary knowledge and skills for improving the health of individuals and populations by identifying health needs, designing, implementing and evaluating health services and managing the health of individuals, communities and defined populations with a focus on reducing health disparities, decreasing disease burden and improving health outcomes and who will successfully attain board certification in the field of Public Health and General Preventive Medicine (PHGPM) after completion of training.

Residents work as part of the EversCare team to gain a practical understanding of the social determinants of health and their impact on the lives of individuals served by UMMC and served by the programs of the Myrlie Evers-Willliams Institute. Residents work in collaboration with the EversCare team to assess and address the social determinants of health needs of patients and others referred to EversCare. Residents also gain familiarity with community-based programs working to address the social determinants of health for individuals within the community.
