Welcome from the Executive Director

Welcome to the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities (MEWI)

At MEWI, we are deeply committed to addressing the persistent health disparities that affect Mississippi and underserved communities nationwide. Our mission is to advance health equity through cutting-edge research, community-driven programs, and educational initiatives that empower the next generation of healthcare leaders.

Named in honor of civil rights icon Myrlie Evers-Williams, our Institute is dedicated to tackling critical issues such as chronic disease, maternal and mental health, and the structural and social determinants that drive health inequities. By bridging scientific research with real-world solutions, we strive to develop evidence-based practices and policies that improve health outcomes for marginalized populations.

What sets MEWI apart is our commitment to collaboration. We believe that the most effective solutions arise when we work alongside the very communities we serve. Our partnerships with community-based organizations, healthcare providers, and academic researchers ensure that our work is impactful and responsive to the needs of diverse populations. Our Community Advisory Board is central to this effort, providing invaluable insight and helping us shape culturally relevant and sustainable programs.

I invite you to explore our website and discover the many ways in which MEWI is driving change. Whether you are a student, researcher, community member, or healthcare professional, there are opportunities to get involved and contribute to our shared vision of a healthier, more just society.

Together, we can build a future where health equity is not just a goal but a reality.

Warm regards,
