Return of Indirect Costs

In order to aid departments in building research infrastructure and to support the research of their investigators, UMMC offers a return of a portion of the total indirect costs received on a project to the recipient department/principal investigator (PI).

Qualifications and guidelines

What awards are eligible
Any award that pays a federally-negotiated rate is eligible for return. Awards that pay the 31% industry rate are not eligible for indirect returns. Indirect costs of $10,000 or more must be accumulated within the fiscal year before funds will be distributed to the department or PI.

What amount will be returned
For awards that pay the full, federally-negotiated research indirect cost rate, 25% of the total indirect costs received will be returned to the department to be used to build and support research infrastructure. Up to $2,500 of the indirect costs returned to the department will be placed in an incentive account for use by the recipient PI.

For awards that pay any of the other federally-negotiated rates, 15% of the total indirect costs received will be returned to the department to be used to build and support research infrastructure. Up to $2,500 of the indirect costs returned to the department will be placed in an incentive account for use by the recipient PI.

For awards with multiple PIs, the return of indirect costs will follow the business plan submitted to the ORSP as approved by the PIs and their chairs at proposal submission. Any changes proposed after that time must be approved by the PIs, their chairs, and the ORSP.

How are the returns made
These returns are tracked and automatically dispersed annually by the ORSP. Participation in this incentive program is automatic for all eligible awards.

Questions about the return of indirects should be directed to Paige Carpenter, Director of Research and Sponsored Programs, Post-Award Division.
