Research Excellence Awards

Meritorious Research Service Awards

The Meritorious Research Service Awards recognize individuals who during their employment at UMMC have made outstanding contributions to the research mission through their service to the institution and/or who have brought recognition to the institution through their service to national organizations. Contributions are defined as service to their respective field that directly or indirectly advances opportunities and/or resources across departments at UMMC. Recipients should exemplify UMMC's commitment to teaching, research or service by participating in outreach through their professional field. Awards will be given in three categories: Faculty, Core Leader and Support Staff.

Recognition

The recipients of the Meritorious Research Service Awards will be recognized at the annual Excellence in Research Award Ceremony will receive the following honorariums: $2,500 for faculty, $1,500 for core leader and $1,000 for support staff.

Eligibility

Nominees must demonstrate commitment to one's department, school, university, and academic/professional discipline as exemplified by, but not limited to, some or all of the following activities that will be used as review and scoring criteria.

Faculty

  • Full-time UMMC faculty member
  • 5 years of UMMC service and a strong record of scholarly achievements (i.e., continued research, teaching, and publications and service at the national or international level)
  • Served as a PI or Co-Investigator on an extramurally funded grant/contract; private research contracts may also be considered, if the research results in peer-reviewed manuscripts
  • Active and substantive scientific and logistical contributions to the management of research program
  • Refereed or contributed presentations at national and international scientific meetings
  • Evidence of research productivity: usually more than 10 publications in peer-reviewed journals, several as first, senior or primary author
  • Publications should include work that demonstrates the nominees ability to generate and test hypotheses, and should represent a significant contribution to the published literature
  • Participating in recruiting efforts, e.g., going to career fairs, giving talks, advertising graduate programs
  • Membership on committees or task forces within a program, department, school or university
  • Consultations or independent initiatives to serve a program, department, school, or university apart from membership on committees or task forces
  • Advisory committee membership
  • A record of ongoing journal and grant peer review
  • Member of NIH or other grant review panels
  • Participant or consultant to accrediting and other educational review boards
  • Leadership in a national professional society
  • Institution of new or novel research ideas, concepts, or techniques that markedly impact the respective field of interest

Core leader

  • Demonstrated service both within UMMC and outside, in the broader community, to directly or indirectly advance opportunities and/or resources across departments at UMMC. Examples would include development, upkeep and size and scope of core facility utilization.
  • Participates in activities that lead to the development of a national reputation
  • Informal consultation with colleagues on matters related to the design of research, development of research proposals
  • Analyses of data for reports and publications, review of draft manuscripts prepared for publication, etc.
  • May participate in teaching activities that would advance the knowledge or research capabilities in other laboratories across departments at UMMC or other institutions.
  • Memberships or consultations on committees or task forces within a program, department, school, or university.
  • Evidence that practice contributions have had important effects on an agency or a program;
  • Invitations to present/train at external agencies or institutions.

Support staff

  • Demonstrated service both within the university and outside, in the broader community, to directly or indirectly advances opportunities and/or resources across departments at UMMC.
  • Informal consultation with colleagues on matters related to the design of research, development of research proposals.
  • Analyses of data for reports and publications.
  • May participate in teaching activities that would advance the knowledge or research capabilities in other laboratories across departments at UMMC or other institutions.
  • Evidence that practice contributions have had important effects on an agency or a program.
  • Invitations to present/train at external agencies or institutions.

Nomination criteria

Nominations may be submitted by any UMMC employee via the online nomination form. Nomination materials must include:

  • Letter of recommendation from the nominator clearly stating the candidate's eligibility for the award and a detailed description of why the candidate fits the criterion for their respective category.
  • Letter(s) of support from the candidate's supervisor(s) (division chief, department chair, dean, associate vice chancellor)
  • Candidate's CV, including a complete list of the candidate's publications and extramural funding information

Summary statement that describes the candidate's accomplishments that are the most important contributions for consideration for this award (two-page limit).

Review criteria

Candidates will be scored based off the following criteria:

Faculty

  • Research accomplishments
    • Impact of research discovery in respective field of interest
    • Original research in peer-reviewed journals
    • Research support generated through grants and contracts (federal, foundation and industry)
    • Other publications (e.g., review articles, book chapters, editorials)
    • Peer-reviewed research presentations (lectures, abstracts, panels)
  • Service
    • Participation in recruiting efforts (e.g., attending career fairs, giving talks, advertising graduate programs)
    • Membership on committees or task forces within a program, department, school, or university
    • Membership on grant review panels or with local, regional and national organizations relating to research
    • Membership or participation to accrediting and other educational review boards
    • Consultations or independent initiatives to serve a program, department, school, or university apart from membership on committees and task forces

Core leader

  • Service accomplishments
    • Demonstrated service both within UMMC and outside, in the broader community, to directly or indirectly, advance opportunities and/or resources across departments at UMMC. (e.g., development, upkeep and size and scope of core facility utilization)
