Here, a specially trained UMMC pharmacist and pharmacy technician work closely in clinic with your providers and care team.

What is a Specialty Pharmacy?

A specialty pharmacy handles unusual medicines that may not be available in a neighborhood pharmacy. These rare medicines are typically used for conditions that need special treatment. Sometimes, insurance companies require special approval for these medicines before they will pay. Some of these medicines may need special handling. Almost all of them take extra patient education and support to make sure they are used correctly.

With our Specialty Pharmacy program, a specially trained pharmacist and pharmacy technician take care of your medicine. They are on staff at UMMC and work closely with your provider and others who are helping you.

How We Can Help

Ask your healthcare provider to send your specialty prescription to us, and we will handle everything else. We can:

• Work with insurance and drug companies to get you the best price
• Teach you how to take your medicine
• Mail your medicine to your home
• Work with your providers to make sure your medicine is working
• Answer any questions you may have
• Remind you when you need refills

We stay in constant touch with your providers so we can quickly solve any medication problems that may come up.

If you get your medicine from a different pharmacy, you may be able to switch to us. You can ask your UMMC pharmacist how to transfer the prescription to UMMC Specialty Pharmacy.
